Linear Accelerator

Two Linear Accelerators are available to deliver treatments of high‐energy radiation (photons) for external beam treatments. Linear Accelerators treat all parts and/or organs of the body. Radiation comes out of the part of the accelerator called the gantry (see diagram below). The design in this technology allows the gantry to move 360 degrees around the patient at several angles for more precise treatment. This helps to spare adjacent normal tissue as much as possible. Additionally, the treatment couch moves the patient up, down, left, and right, as well as rotates the patient under the gantry for proper positioning during treatment. Linear Accelerators can also produce electron radiation to treat superficial conditions such as keloids when specific apparatuses are attached to the head of the gantry.
