Food Allergies
As many as 32 million Americans have food allergies. The most common food allergy among children is peanut, followed by milk and shellfish. Other common food allergens include eggs, fish, soybeans, tree nuts and wheat.
Signs and symptoms of food allergies
Food allergies can be mild, severe or even life-threatening. Symptoms may include:
- hives (raised, red, itchy rash)
- itchy mouth
- stomachache or mild nausea
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
Certain foods can trigger anaphylaxis, a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis is an emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Signs of anaphylaxis include:
- difficulty breathing, coughing or wheezing
- feeling dizzy, faint or weak
- loss of consciousness
- nausea and vomiting
- widespread hives infections
