CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital – Kleberg is recognizing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by announcing its newly renovated mammography department. Patients are now able to utilize the most up-to-date mammography technology.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society, which estimates that over 300,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2024.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to promote mammograms as the most effective tool to fight breast cancer.

“If you can detect breast cancer early, your outcome is definitely better,” said Jeannie Daughtrey, mammography technologist at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital – Kleberg. “Early detection is always the best option.”

She said the hospital made some renovations and updates to the mammography department. Now, 3D mammograms are available, providing better images for patients. 3D mammogram machines create 3D images and standard 2D images for experts to get a thorough look at a patient’s breast tissue.

“This technology helps our patients receive better imaging,” Daughtrey said. “It reduces the need for follow-up imaging, detecting slightly more cancers and improving cancer detection in dense breast tissue.”

She said the newly renovated department provides the Kingsville community and surrounding areas with access to great mammography care.

“This allows our patients to receive the care they deserve, at home,” she said. “It also helps them to schedule and not put their appointments on hold. This is a big win for the community.”

Additionally, for diagnostic mammograms, results can be given the same day. Daughtrey said the radiologists her team works with are specifically trained in mammograms, giving patients peace of mind.

“Mammograms are crucial,” said Richard Morin, president of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital – Kleberg. “We want to ensure our patients know we are investing in them and in their health care. They will receive the most dignified and compassionate care, right here, without having to travel miles to another city. When they choose CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital – Kleberg, they’re choosing excellence.”
